This is quite the opposite of the bright, fashionable and fancy cellphone cases you can buy off the shelf these days, but to make something for someone who appreciates hand made products, is special.
I made this DIY Cell phone case as a gift for my mother to make life a bit easier after her hip operation.
I combined cotton, leather, lace and crochet to make it more interesting.
(Whenever someone dumps a box of leather off cuts at your front door, say thank you and add it to your stash…..
You might need it sooner than you think…)
To make the DIY cellphone case you need:
Any fabric, batting, leather, lace and crochet yarn and needle, velcro and a sewing machine with matching sewing thread.
Make sure you measure the cellphone properly: Length, width and thickness.
Cut the bag slightly bigger to make sure the phone will slide in and out easily.
This is the leather part.
Draw the heart with your fabric marker/chalk and cut it out.
Glue it onto the fabric and let it dry.
Cut 2 fronts on fabric and 1 on batting
Cut 2 backs on fabric and 1 on batting
Handle the batting and one of the pieces of fabric as one. Sew the 2 fabric pieces together on three sides – right side of the fabric facing each other. Turn it inside out.
Do this with the front and back.
Trim the batting away as shown on the picture.
Now you can sew the leather heart on top with a neat topstitch.
If you work with soft leather, a denim needle or any strong thick needle will work well. Remember that you can not unpick the sewing as the holes of the needle does not disappear as on fabric.
Sew the lace around the edge.
Sew the leather trimming and velcro on.
Join the front and back by sewing the other side of the lace by hand onto the front of the bag.
This will give the bag a bit of height to compensate for the thickness of the phone.
I crocheted a long chain stitch to get the length of the shoulder band and joined it with a few double crochet stitches to the lace of the bag.
The rest of the strap is one row treble stitches and 2 rows of double crochet on both sides.
The width of the strap is personal taste – so anything will work here.
(You can use anything for the shoulder band.)
With this DIY Cell phone case, you can have your phone always with you, with comfort and handmade style – no more running for your phone!
Please share this with your handmade-loving-friends!
