Believe it or not – the fabric (PVC) I used to make this handbag – was once used for a matric farewell dress!!
I think it is much nicer as a hand bag though……….
This PVC (fake leather) has a soft “batting-like” finish at the back
Leather will of course be the absolute best to use for a small hand bag like this but I suppose you can have fun with any kind of textile or fabric.

It is very simple to make and quicker than you think.
Join the side panels with the insert.
Do the same with the lining. (This can be any fabric you like)
Fold the handles and join with a topstitch.
Turn the PVC part inside out and put the lining on the inside.
Pin everything together with handles.
Join everything together with a neat topstitch.
Cut two of the cat faces.
Iron vilene on the back of the one cat face to make it more firm and stable.
Glue the front face to the back face.
Use “stitch and tear” on both sides of the face to make sewing easier and neater as a normal machine foot does not move smoothly over PVC. You get a “walking foot” designed for funny textiles and leather that works easy and smooth.
Do a very neat topstitch and pull the loose ends to the back and make a small knot to end it off neat.
A thick top stitch thread gives a much better appearance.
Glue the face to the bag and secure it with two small stitches once the glue is dry.
…..and of course use all the help that you can get……
This cat handbag make a great gift for someone and will definitely make a statement on your way to the shopping mall.
